A downloadable reminiscence

I Went to Bourbon, Indiana Once is a hack of I Went to Seattle Once by Lucky Newt Games which is itself a hack of I Went to Japan Once by James Lennox-Gordon. As per the original, you are friends, family, or perhaps random strangers bored in line at a gas station who all suddenly realize you've been to Bourbon, Indiana, a small little town without much to do. Did you visit either (or both!) of the town's dollar stores? Check out the town gazebo, a local hangout spot? Or perhaps you hit up the Redbox kiosk and relaxed for the night.

Players roll dice and share experiences blending the results of two separate tables, but once too many players tell the same stories over again (as we Midwesterners are wont to do), everyone goes their own way and the reminiscence concludes.

Find out what you did in a town I've spent over a third of my life in! ðŸ˜€

Note: the demo versions are the same as the full version, they're merely missing the background art. If that's all you want, then enjoy! 😀 The paid version includes the plain text version as well as a full color one, each of which comes in Legal or A5 page size and as an .svg or a .pdf. If you're willing and able, support via purchase is greatly appreciated and will encourage me to make even more games, but it's certainly not necessary 🙂

Added December 7th, 2022: There's now a zine version of the game! It's an 8-page zine using photos taken by Angel of Bourbon, Indiana itself, and you can grab it along with the other files by purchasing the game (or if you've already purchased it). OR you can even order a copy mailed to you in the US (you'll also get all of the digital files if you do so) by selecting the option below (US addresses only, but feel free to have it mailed to someone you know in the US, it doesn't have to be you).

How Do I Fold It Though?

This video is a great example of how to fold an 8-page zine! This is only used for the zine file, though, as the others don't need to be folded :D

The game I think most sincerely embodies how a city’s heart is an echo of its residents is a little one-page zine by Beth Jackson called I Went to Bourbon, Indiana Once.

Oh my goodness, Aaron! This is an absolutely amazing, well-detailed, thorough video that's far more than Angel and I ever could've expected. For our game to be part of this video, let alone captured so perfectly (beyond our hopes and dreams), is incredible. We're small creators and watch videos like this about other games, but we never expected one of our creations to be part of something like this! We create with the intention of entertaining others, sure, but our primary goal is to make people think, experience, and embrace the world in a new way. You did such a glorious job of bringing that to life, and made our whole weekend 🙌

Also, I never hit the subscribe button on a creator quicker than that :D

I’m glad you liked it! I lived all around Indiana for about a decade, so games like this have a special place in my heart

That's really awesome! Honestly the game was initially made with sarcasm. I'm from Chicago originally and small towns are soooooooooooooo not my vibe (I miss public transportation SO much). But then we remade it, Angel added her photography, and it became a half-silly, half-celebration, which I think sits far better with us both.

It's really cool you lived in different parts of Indiana!

huh, i didnt know i lived in bourbon, indiana lmao. if you don't have trinkets, you could use the leg slap & "welp, time to get going" -> stand up -> finally leave midwestern goodbye instead

OMG LOL yes, the leg slap is an iconic piece of midwestern life for sure, and I LOVE this series of three events since, yes, they are almost always very gapped out just like this 🤣
