You'll Need

  • 🎲 2d6 (two standard six-sided dice)
  • 🪙 10 thingies (coins, pawns, meeples, whatever)
  • 📄 A printed copy of this zine (one piece of paper, reusable)
  • 📝 A way to track your score (pen and paper, phone, etc)

The Story

You are a deity in human form. After living peacefully amongst other mortals for many years, a world-killing catastrophe was foretold. None would survive.

To escape this fate, you placed your spirit into a magical box. You were later awakened and told of another catastrophe, one you can prevent.

Unfortunately, while your body and spirit were restored perfectly, your mind was not. Your memories and knowledge are mixed up, still trapped inside the box.

Without your wits to rely on, you’ve decided to lean on fate, picking up a couple of dice to help you. You only hope you didn’t make an enemy of fate before the catastrophe...

How to Play

This is a clone of Shut the Box, but you get three chances to score 100 points. You'll roll dice and place one of your thingies on any numbers that total up to exactly what you rolled. When you cannot cover numbers totaling your roll, your mind has been pushed too far and you need a break.

After three attempts, the world is saved or lost... It's all up to you.

More to Come

I made this in an hour. Including this itch page lol.

I still want to do the following:

  • Playtest and polish
  • Set up different potential endings
  • Optional journaling about your memories and the stress of pushing to remember in time
  • A campaign that adds different adjustments to the game and stuff
  • I dunno if this'll be a zine or PDF when I'm done, but currently it's set up to be a 4-page zine. You can print it that way if you want :D

The Hyper 1 HOUR Game Jam

This game was created for Hyper 1 HOUR Game Jam #46 (Survive Confusion), which means I literally made it in an hour! WHEW! I highly encourage you to check the jams out 🧡 They're every Friday at 6 pm Eastern, and Lýz livestreams them, including the theme reveal and playing entries after. She's super fun and encouraging and awesome!

How do we claim a community copy? Isn't it free? But it's asking us to pay for a community copy, which is confusing

Hi! Sorry about that. So when you click that button, a pop-up appears. If you click the "no thanks, just take me to the downloads" you should claim the game :D

This is the same for any pay-what-you-want game as well. If a game shows "pay what you want," a similar popup will appear. You can always just hit that "no thanks" button :D

Awesome game! I failed at saving the world with an overall score of 83 😱
But, I'll keep trying so that I can become a successful deity! 😊

Oh my goodness, that's so close! And hopefully by the time you try again I'll have expanded on it :D

I wonder that since this game is about opening a box, if the opening could form part of the gameplay somehow?
https://brstf.itch.io/infinity-card-template is an origami project that 'flips' the paper to different views.

OH WOW! That's freaking brilliant, I'd never heard of that before! I'll definitely look into it, I think that flipping the little wooden blocks in the classic Shut the Box is part of the fun and so figuring out a way to capture that in a piece of paper would be amazing too, even if it's just a separate printable. Then people don't need a bunch of change or whatever (cuz tbh no one uses cash these days lol).

Thanks for the recommendation!
